TeamViewer

This is a great little program which is free for non-commercial use. It lets you connect to another pc remotely and you may as well be at the keyboard. Of course the other person has to let you in. Both parties must have the eatire same version of Teamviewer installed. A very useful feature is the ability to preset a password which means as long as the other pc is set so that Teamviewer starts up when windows starts you can reboot the other pc remotely and still connect back in to it. I used it when I went to France on business and needed to get some poker points everyday do that I could qualify for a live event. France did not allow connections from this poker site (they want the site to have a . Fr domain) but I was able to remotely connect in to my desktop at home using this software and eventually qualified for the promotion. Each connection has its own I'd and there is an option to save all your connection i'ds centrally so you know which I'd is associated with which pc. There is even a Teamviewer iPhone app.

Free Microsoft Office

We've all heard about microsoft office, but it is rather expensive. What if you could have a free non-pirated  version.  Well ,you can, almost.  Their is a free office suite called openoffice.  It has pretty much most of the functionality, plus you can use it to read microsoft office documents, and write documents in microsoft office format

Update your Drivers

You know what its like. Your drivers become out of date and its impossible to find the latest correct drivers for your pc.   The answer to your problems is a piece of software called SlimDrivers. 

Most people assume that windows update will report no updates for your device when quite often new and improved drivers are available.  SlimDriversfree means you have to do a manual scan and install.  A really good point is that they actually prompt you to create a restore point.   You are advised to do so, as a corrupt driver can really make your system nearly impossible to use, and its a safe way of being able to restore your computer to its previous state.

notepad++

Have you ever been frustrated with the lack of functionality in windows notepad.   Well the answer is here in an easy to use functionally rich text editor called notepad++. It has some useful features, like being able to open several files aIt once, and the ability to detect that an opened file has changed as soon as you switch to the appropriate file tab.  There is also the ability to record and to playback macro's.  It also has a plugin manager which comes with some pre-defined plug-ins.  I am currently using the compare plugins which highlights the differences between two files.  It also has syntax highlighting which is based on the type of file you tell notepad that it is.  It is an excellent editor and I have come nowhere near to exploring it's full potential.   If you need to do any serious text editing, this is a tool worthy of consideration.

cd burner XP

previously, i mentioned the media player however I think more people would be interested in a free dvd burner.  CDBurnerXP is a simple to use piece of software which can be used to burn a variety of devices to disk. It has a nice easy to use interface as well.

Revo uninstaller

This is a program which uninstalls a program properly from your system. Many of the standard uninstallers leave behind registry entries and files on the hard disk. Revo uninstaller will use the supplied uninstall utility and additionally it will prompt you if you want to scan through the registry to remove any bits that may have been left behind.

This for me is an essential program for anyone using windows.
